Rubrics & POI

Problem

There is too much information on the map, and it is difficult for the user to quickly find the necessary rubric or navigate by looking at the map around him

Process

The map displays more than 3 thousand different rubrics combined into groups. 224 glyphs had already been drawn for them when I joined the team. Such a large number of glyphs added a lot of ambiguity to the user experience

Metaphors weren't always clear or didn't differ from each other at all:

There were a lot of such problems. I started solving them with a detailed analysis of the existing rubrics system. Step by step, I went through all the thousands of rubrics, marking each with the necessary glyph, giving each group a fallback, rubrics that will display a common metaphor for the group of rubrics if, for some reason, a new category appears or a specific one doesn't load

After a detailed analysis of two simplification stages, out of 224 glyphs responsible for rubrics, only 75 remained. These are:

In parallel with rubrics, glyphs unification and decreased their number on the map. Work was underway to create an Indoor layer, and 18 new glyphs were drawn for them // There was also a lot of work on studying indoor layers in neighboring services, finding the best solutions for tasks, and a lot of work //

Only 15 of them hit the map

Result

Only the necessary and understandable metaphors remained. 9 rubrics. 90 POIs. Of course, there is no limit to perfection, and I already want to improve this system.

Additional work

Glyphs and their number were simplified. Now it was necessary to reduce the number of shades. Previously Pins and POI differed in shades, which in essence, didn't make much sense. I got rid of this logic, leaving one color belonging to each category

In parallel with all the tasks for the POI on the substrate, I was engaged in bringing the search POIs in order, both with connection to advertising POIs and between days and nights
